Same-Day Dental Crowns in Tifton, GA: What You Need to Know

Most people put off dental work for two reasons. The first is cost. The second is time, and the traditional crown process asks for a lot of it.

You’d come in, get your tooth prepped, bite down on the impression material, and leave with a temporary crown that might or might not hold up until your permanent one came back from the lab two to three weeks later. Then you’d come back, get numb again, and have the final crown placed. Two appointments. Two rounds of local anesthetic. Two days worked around.

At Fulp Family Dentistry, we do it differently. One appointment. Your permanent crown, done before you leave.

What Is a Same-Day Crown?

A same-day crown is a permanent dental crown designed, milled, and placed during a single office visit using computer-aided design and manufacturing technology, often called CAD/CAM. Instead of sending impressions to an outside dental lab and waiting weeks for the result, the crown is created right here in our Tifton office.

The technology starts with a digital scan of your tooth. That scan feeds into software that designs the crown to match the exact shape, size, and bite of your surrounding teeth. Once the design is confirmed, a milling machine carves the crown from a solid ceramic block, and the dentist places and bonds it, usually within the same two-to-three-hour appointment.

No goopy impression material. No temporary crown to worry about. No second appointment.

How the Same-Day Crown Process Works at Fulp Family Dentistry

Knowing what to expect makes the whole experience easier, so here’s a straightforward look at what happens during a same-day crown appointment.

Step 1: Prep the tooth. Dr. Nicole Fulp or Dr. Scott Fulp numbs the area and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown. This part of the process is the same as a traditional crown appointment.

Step 2: Digital scan. Instead of biting into impression material, we use a small handheld scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. The scan takes a few minutes and is entirely comfortable.

Step 3: Crown design. The digital scan feeds into design software, where the crown’s shape and fit are mapped out to match your bite. You’ll be able to see the design on screen and ask questions while it’s being planned.

Step 4: Milling. The design is sent to the in-office milling unit, which carves your crown from a solid ceramic block in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The ceramic is shade-matched to your surrounding teeth so the finished crown blends naturally.

Step 5: Placement and bonding. Once the crown is milled and checked for fit, Dr. Fulp bonds it into place. Any final adjustments to the bite are made chairside, and you’re done.

Are Same-Day Crowns as Durable as Traditional Crowns?

This is the question we hear most often, and the answer is yes. Same-day crowns made from high-strength ceramic perform comparably to traditional lab-made restorations in long-term clinical studies.

Research published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry puts the ten-year success rate for CAD/CAM ceramic crowns at between 94 and 97 percent, comparable to conventional crowns made in an outside lab. A 2023 patient satisfaction survey by Dentsply Sirona found that 91% of patients preferred same-day crowns after experiencing them, with the most common reasons being comfort, speed, and the quality of the final result.

Clinical studies show that approximately 97% of dental crowns remain fully functional at the 10-year mark, and about 85% maintain optimal performance after 15 years. With normal care, including brushing, flossing, and keeping up with your regular cleanings, a same-day crown can last 15 years or more.

One of the underappreciated durability advantages of same-day crowns is what they eliminate: the temporary. Traditional temporary crowns are made from soft material and bonded with weak cement by design, so they can be removed. That means they sometimes break, fall off, or shift between appointments, which is not only inconvenient but can expose the prepared tooth to bacteria and increase the risk of complications before the permanent crown arrives. Same-day crowns remove that risk entirely.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?

Same-day crowns are a good fit for a wide range of patients and situations. The most common reasons we place crowns at Fulp Family Dentistry include:

  • A tooth with a large cavity that a filling can no longer adequately restore
  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and needs protection
  • A broken or worn-down tooth
  • Replacing an old crown that has failed or cracked

Most adults and older teens with a tooth in reasonable overall health are candidates, though Dr. Nicole Fulp or Dr. Scott Fulp will evaluate your specific situation before recommending same-day versus traditional crown placement. In some cases, such as teeth with very short roots or complex positioning, a lab-made crown may still be the better approach, and the team will be straightforward with you about which option fits your situation.

What to Expect After a Same-Day Crown

Recovery from a same-day crown is similar to any restorative procedure. Some sensitivity around the tooth and gum tissue is normal for the first few days, particularly to temperature, and over-the-counter pain relief handles it easily for most patients.

A few things help your crown settle in and last:

  • Avoid very sticky or hard foods for the first 24 hours
  • Brush gently around the crown margin at the gumline
  • Floss daily, sliding the floss down rather than snapping it
  • If you grind your teeth at night, let us know, as a night guard protects both the crown and your surrounding teeth
