It’s finally football season! If your child is going to be under Friday night lights this season, you should know the importance of mouthguards.
“Sports within the community and area schools provide many benefits, like offering young people the opportunity to be a part of a team, to achieve physical fitness, to be held accountable, and to build life-long relationships,” said Dr. Scott Fulp of Fulp Family Dentistry. “However, high-impact sports can pose serious risks to teeth; impact during sports can cause chipped teeth, lost teeth, cuts on the face or tissues in the mouth, and other injuries. Not only can these injuries cause severe pain to your child – they can also take a toll on your pocketbook if dental work is needed.” The answer? Mouthguards help reduce the severity and can prevent many sports-related mouth and teeth injuries from happening.
Whether off-the-shelf or custom made, mouthguards are key to protecting teeth; however, many patients find custom-made mouthguards tend to fit better and are more comfortable than mouthguards bought from a store. At Fulp Family Dentistry, we can make custom-made mouthguards by scanning patients’ mouths. (No gooey impressions!) While there are other options, like boil-and-bite mouthguards and stock mouthguards, these mouthguards can be bulky, and can make breathing or talking difficult if the guard doesn’t fit properly.
Mouthguard Tips:
- It is important to keep your mouth guard clean and dry between games.
- Regularly clean the mouthguard either with a toothbrush and toothpaste or in cool, soapy water. Always rinse thoroughly before using.
- Store your mouthguard in its special container – not just thrown in the bottom or side pocket of your sports bag.
- Never leave the mouthguard in the sun or hot water.
- Regularly check your mouthguard for signs or wear and tear.
Many severe sports injuries to the mouth can be prevented with a mouthguard, please take the time to reinforce the importance of wearing a mouthguard for contact sports. Call Fulp Family Dentistry and ask about our custom mouthguard discount if you are interested! 229.382.7996.
